From the words of Simeon, “for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel” (Lk. 2:29). These words speak to the heart of this series, the reason for Epiphany, offering the light of Christ to all nations. The audacity of the Gospel is that the light shining in Jesus shone beyond Israel to illuminate the whole world. We will see how the light of Christ reached outsiders from the beginning and continues to shine light into the dark places throughout the world and into our lives.
We celebrate the “magi” in Epiphany, the manifestation, an unveiling of the Gospel message for all people. The world finally gets to find out what God is like. Light is the traditional symbol for this season. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.
